THE DANBEE BEELINE
"TELL ME A STORY."
Here in the Journalism and Media program at Camp Danbee, we borrowed Don Hewitt’s mandate and made it the mantra for what we do. The girls in our Journalism and Media program become our correspondents and we provide opportunities for them to tell stories by practicing and expanding on their writing and communication skills. In the program, the girls learn how to develop a story idea, how to craft inquisitive questions, how to prepare for and conduct an interview, how to take notes and how to turn those notes into a thoughtful and well-crafted story.
We recognize there are many ways to tell a story. An article is one way. So, too, is poetry, or fiction writing, or photo essays, or illustration or video. We welcome and encourage all of that. The goal is to nurture the pleasure of writing and during the process of storytelling, the girls will develop and refine critical thinking, interpersonal and communication skills.
We view storytelling, regardless of the format, as a stimulating creative outlet. The girls get to explore a subject in detail. They get to ask questions and learn as much as they can about that subject. We believe that questions are the doorways to knowledge. The girls then get to tell others about what they have learned. They get to tell the story taking shape in their mind using words of their choosing to create a picture of their own design. It truly is exhilarating.
So sit back, relax, and read all you like because the Danbee Journalism and Media girls are here to tell you a story!
Happy Reading,
Gary Hook, Director, Journalism and Media

You will see some of the campers’ favorite things at lake Compounce. Lastly, you will see some amazing water slides. Enjoy the ride! – Avery Portugal
